It’s important to remember that this technology advances at an amazing rate so it might be out of date if you have an older book! We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. There are bodice blocks, trouser blocks, skirt and dress blocks as well as flat blocks (one that use no shaping with darts. Another process which can be seen as a time-waster is making a toile of your pattern (aka making a prototype in cheap fabric).

Metric Pattern Cutting for Women's Wear provides a straightforward introduction to the principles of form pattern cutting for garments to fit the body shape, and flat pattern cutting for casual garments and jersey wear. All the info you need for drafting patterns from measurements with many, many style options for each basic block - extremely clear diagrams with written details. I draw lines down my side and take measurements seperately for back and front and use those to draft the front and back seperately as opposed to using the full bust, waist and hip measurements as in the book.

Over the years I've noticed that the date is often missed off each pattern piece (I've done it myself too) and although at the time it may not seem important, you'll see the importance when you've tweaked the pattern 10 times and you don't know which pattern piece was the latest version. It isn't so suitable if you don't have any experience as it *is* a technical book and it does look daunting on first opening because of all the detail inside. I've also found it's super helpful to mark on your waist, hip, knee and elbow lines on each piece as these will come in handy if you're adjusting the fit later on; this means making sure you mark them on your block patterns too. These block patterns form the perfect groundwork to help you create perfect fitting clothes right from the start.

I love the way that this book takes the basic shapes and shows how to adapt them to create such a huge variety of garment shapes and sizes. However, the great expansion of casual wear, cut in jersey or stretch fabrics, has led to the growth of 'flat cutting' with no darting to create the shape and this edition devotes a whole section to this type of cutting. I do think another book which details how to sew clothes together and various techniques would be a good companion. It’s made up of the instructions for drafting a range of blocks but doesn’t show us any examples of ways to adapt the blocks immediately. g.: design, aliquot parts, basic body blocks, drawing blocks for individual figures, from block to pattern, the skirt, trousers, basic adaptions of the bodice blocks, the sleeve, collarsdresses, coas, jackets, etc.

But what is the most amazing is that it teaches you how to draft different blocks with different ease in them which is great especially when you are drafting different styles.

This first section is also where we are introduced to some tools and pattern making rules about smoothing lines, adding seam allowances and labelling pieces.
