When people watch a game played their first instinct is to form some kind of value judgement from observing how the players are reacting to the game experience. You will revel in the thrill of the race and the temptation of just one more bet on that horse before it crosses the line. However I just found out that one of the game rules is that there's no communication between the two players.

People will cheer, and others will curse, as that horse that was one space from winning gets shunted back three spaces. As the race progresses and more players get involved across more horses, this web of intrigue assumes deliciously exponential proportions. This unfortunately precludes playing this with my daughter or those who don’t often play hobbyist titles. A small magnetic clasp box drthat for once is not too big for purpose and absolutely rammed full of components. In the solo mode, this roll will also determine the AI action by using a grid to match up both die rolls. At the end of the game each bet is worth the amount of the bet multiplied by a number based on if the horse placed first, second, or third. The first dice tells you which horse to move while the second shows you how many spaces down the track it goes. Other options include moving horses of your choice on the track backwards or forward, influencing their chances.

By placing bets in the back half of the lap, you can strap your bags of cash onto horses in the lead, or perhaps horses other players are influencing. Other than people who like an occasional flutter on the Grand National, I don’t know a single person who’s actually into horse racing as a sport. Two dice are rolled, giving you two pairs of numbers, that then need to be written into one of three states shown by a card draw. While there are many ways to earn money during a horse race, only the player who makes the most money will be declared the winner. There is deal-making and joined efforts to tank a particular steed’s position because half the table has leaned in heavily on their bets. Long Shot: The Dice Game invites you to embrace both the short term goal that might keep you going with the outside bet that will see you claiming victory.

Thankfully, Long Shot the Dice Game is edge of your seat fun without watching old people lose their life savings. In some ways this game reminds us of Downforce but the dice and the options on the player board add another layer to the gameplay. This is another family-weight game where you can own racers and bet on them, although this time they’re cars rather than horses. One lets you bet on the horse even in the closing stages of the race, while the other lets you cross a box on that horse’s card, allowing you to favour other horses on a repeat of that die roll. Apparently I'm not alone in thinking this and I'd be willing to bet that reaction is fairly average for anyone interested in the game.
