Each decodable book has been carefully crafted to help children to build on their secure phonic knowledge, moving confidently from decoding words to reading fluently and for pleasure. This system judges the level of difficulties based on how many letters per word, how many words per page, how many lines per page, how many pages per book not on reading progression. All children in Reception and Year 1 participate in a daily phonics lessons, usually in the morning. Children with special educational needs follow the Little Wandle Phonics programme as outlined above.

Our Foundations section includes a complete offer for Nurseries, which includes guidance, training and resources for three areas: Foundations for Phonics, Foundations for Language and Foundations for a Love of Reading. The 32 Phase 3 Big Cat books match perfectly to the Little Wandle progression and support all the Letters and Sounds / Tricky words and words children meet in this phase. However, for some children it may be best for them to be part of the main lesson and then work with an adult. The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme begins in the earliest years with the Foundations for Phonics programme, which we deliver to our Pre-School children. They will practice decoding the words in the book and will discuss the meaning of any new words before reading.

Although it is ideal to start our programme at the beginning of the academic year, you can start at any point. Once your children have established letter formation please use your school handwriting policy/programme to teach handwriting.

Each reading practice session has a clear focus, so that the demands of the session do not overload the children’s working memory. Big Cat Phonics for Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed in collaboration with Wandle Learning Tr.Children with a SEND are given additional support during the lesson and extra 1:1 lessons planned to match their point of development using the Foundation for Phonics programme or the LW SEND programme. These short, sharp lessons last 15-20 minutes daily and have been designed to ensure children quickly catch up to age-related expectations in reading. The children who did not meet the required standard for the check in year 1 enter again in year 2 with additional support.

Our Phonics Book Bag Readers series includes a wide selection of diverse and inclusive stories, accompanied by bright and contemporary illustrations that will engage and inspire young readers. Children start phase 2 of the Little Wandle phonics programme as soon as possible after starting Reception, usually week 2 of the Autumn term when children are settled in their new surroundings. Phonics is delivered every day in Reception so that children have plenty of opportunities to revisit, practice and apply their phonic knowledge. Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised has been developed by Little Sutton and Wandle English Hubs and taken forward by Little Sutton Primary School and Wandle Learning Trust in partnership with other phonics and early reading experts. We anticipate that most children and young people who follow it will be in specialist provision of some kind. How to’ videos, training and prompt cards help you ensure your team is confident delivering these activities. Sorry to jump on this thread months later but my DS is using this reading programme also and has been reading the phase 5 books since yr 1.

Any child with a SEND, who would struggle with cognitive overload from the pace of the Rapid Catch-Up programme, is assessed on the SEND assessment and the best SEND pathway and planning is selected for them accordingly. It mirrors the main phonics programme but has been created to help children catch up quickly, so it has a faster pace. These three parts of the programme work together to provide you with everything you need to prepare your children for phonics teaching in Reception.Little Wandle is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme, which provides high quality planning and resources for the teaching staff. I too don’t really like the uncertainty of this being a new scheme not directly comparable with the old book bands as it’s harder to choose what books to read together at home of a similar level. Pupils read in all subjects in the curriculum and will read different genres to develop their understanding about a topic.
