In particular it seems as though the way these two books illustrate interconnectedness between events and cause/effect relationships could justify the claim that they carry the same motif. I believe this is due to the repetition and lyricism of this book making it a joy to read aloud, with the vibrant double-page illustrations by Beatriz Vidal adding to the appeal of this book as something to be shared.

I didn't get much of a come back about these books, but they were read and handed on to other children. Verna Aardema was an award-winning American author who published retellings of many African traditional tales. By the way, she couldn't make out the words in "Canterbury Tales" The reason was because it was written and printed in Old English. In this lovely rhyming picture book, based upon the folk traditions of the Nandi people of Kenya, a herdsman named Ki-pat finds a way to end the drought, and bring some much-needed rain to Kapiti Plain. With rhyming lines that repeat many times, this would be a great story to share with a class who could join in with the telling of the story.

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People’s Ears , also illustrated by the Dillons, was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1976 and was chosen as an ALA Notable Children’s Book, as was a third Aardema-Dillon collaboration, Behind the Back of the Mountain .In a quaint village nestled at the edge of a magical forest, lived a curious and imaginative little girl named Nini.

The book is about a drought in Africa, Kapiti Plain and the animals end up migrating so Ki-Pat(main character) finds a way to bring the rain, and animals, back to Kapiti Plain. Not inherently gripping, but the cumulative structure and rhythm of the text makes the simple chain of events far more compelling than they would be otherwise. The poem has repetitive portions that keep building on itself again and again as the story progresses. Recommended to young folklore enthusiasts, and to anyone looking for rhyming texts for young children. Authored by Verna Aardema, Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain is a delightful rhyming story full of bright and vivid illustrations by Beatriz Vidal.

Originally collected by British anthropologist Sir Claud Hollis, and included in his 1909 book The Nandi: Their Language and Folk-Lore, the tale has been modernized by Verna Aardema, whose many excellent adaptations of African folklore include the Caldecott Medal-winner, Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears. This book is a good addition to libraries where knowledge of other cultures is considered important.
